Traditional Dyed Easter Eggs
I have just had a fresh delivery of Ella's free range eggs, so it is time to whip out the food dye and have a bit of fun. Give real food this Easter. Who needs Chocolate anyway? An edible, fun and safe Easter activity for the kids, sans sugar - Elena x
Traditional Easter Egg dyeing…
organic free range eggs
food coloring (blue, red green, yellow)
white vinegar
boiling water
First, you need to create a dye bath. Combine 1/2 cup boiling water with 1 teaspoon of vinegar and 10 to15 drops of food coloring in a heat proof bowl or glass. (Use more food dye to get a stronger colour)
You can also mix food colouring to create your own signature colours. A few drops of red and yellow will make for orange. Blue and red will create purple.
Then, dip hard-boiled eggs in the dye
bath for 2 to 3minutes. A longer time in the dye bath will give a stronger,
richer colour.
You can also add oil to the dye bath
to create a marbled effect.
Finally, use a slotted spoon to
remove eggs. Place the coloured eggs on clean wax paper to dry.
To finish, wipe each egg with olive
oil to get a shiny look.
Now they are ready for your Easter egg hunt, or festive table - Delicious!
